What is Impact?

The Research Excellence Framework was the first exercise to assess the impact of research outside of academia. Impact was defined as ‘an effect on, change or benefit to the economy, society, culture, public policy or services, health, the environment or quality of life, beyond academia’.

‘Beyond Academia’ is very important as it provides the evidence that society benefits from  publicly funded research.

The Stern report has recommended that the interpretation of impact should be broader in REF 2021 than it was 2014, allowing institutions to interpret impact more widely to include the following:

►Public engagement
►Cultural life
►Outside the field

Stern also recommends Institutional level Impact statements in order to encourage interdisciplinary and collaborative inputs.
